Maggie's story in Paper or Plastic is part drama, part comedy, part life, and part fiction. In 2011, my mother passed away. As I sought to find a way to work through my grief, a spunky, curly-haired woman kept appearing in my imagination. You see, my own mother lost her husband at an early age. When Dad was gone, Mom had to learn to do the most basic things in life, like write a check and manage finances.

I found myself wondering what her life had been like, learning not only to live, but to thrive, on her own. Out of my imaginings, I discovered Maggie Bloom. My mother's passing was a pivotal time of change in my own life. I like to think that the important lessons she taught me live on through Maggie's adventures.

The book takes place in a grocery store. I worked in a store such as this for almost four years and I always knew that it would make a great stage for a novel. As you can imagine, I met many interesting people by working there. Although my characters are completely fictional, they could have just as easily been some of my customers. I hope you enjoy the book.
